"Teaching About versus Teaching With: Strategies for Cultivating Students’ AI Literacy (and Ours!)" 4-Part Series - Certificate of Completion

AI literacy is an emergent core competency for the 21st century, but supporting students’ development in this area can lead to complex considerations about assessment, teaching, and the very nature and purpose of learning. This biweekly workshop and community of practice series was designed to empower faculty and instructors to explore many possible strategies for cultivating students’ AI literacy. We explored strategies for teaching about AI and also for teaching with AI, arguing that both dimensions of AI instruction can help students develop crucial AI literacy skills. A collaboration between the UC Riverside's (UCR) XCITE Center for Teaching & Learning and the UC Davis (UCD) Center for Educational Effectiveness, this virtual series invited participation from instructors at both UCR and UCD. Together, we explored principles and strategies for bringing AI-related teaching to courses in ways that are authentic and relevant for courses and for students. Community of practice sessions focused on peer-supported activities for building and showcasing materials used to teach about and teach with AI.

SESSION 1: “Cultivating AI Literacy”

This interactive workshop explored AI literacy and how instructors can bring AI-related teaching to their courses in ways that are authentic and relevant for their courses and their students. By the end of this session, participants would have left with at least 1 concrete idea for how they could begin incorporating AI into some aspect of their course.

SESSION 2: “Teaching About AI”

This hands-on community of practice session explored ideas for introducing students to AI in ways that are relevant to courses and disciplines. By the end of this session, participants would have been able to develop an outline or lesson plan for a discussion/lecture about AI in their course.

SESSION 3: “Teaching With AI”

This hands-on community of practice session explored activities and assignments that actively integrate AI into the learning experience. By the end of this session, participants would have been able to develop an assignment that includes student interaction with AI, or use AI to test an assignment in order to make it more AI-resilient.

SESSION 4: “SHOWCASE”

The final session allowed participants to demonstrate lesson plans and/or assignments they will have used to teach about and/or with AI. By the end of this session, participants would have been able to receive feedback on their works-in-progress, and also learn how peers across disciplines planned to incorporate AI into their courses.
